The Great 80s Project: 1980

Back in May 2017, Real Gone launched “The Great 70s Project”, a ten week exploration of a classic decade’s worth of music.  By side-stepping a couple of the obvious hits and digging deeper into back-catalogue albums, we were able to present a very broad look at the albums of the era and it became one of the site’s most popular features.

A long time in the planning, we’re pleased to present The Great 80s Project, a similar exploration of the decade that brought us a multitude of synth-pop, shiny tunes, bright colours, Live Aid and a handful of stadium giants.

REAL GONE SESSIONS #3: Vincent Carr – Bamburgh Sands

Multi-instrumentalist Vincent Carr released one of the best DIY albums with ‘New Paeans’. Credited to Vincent Carr’s SUMIC, its lengthy multi-layered instrumentals gathered favourable comparisons to Mike Oldfield, while underscoring complex prog rock sounds with a love of pastoral British folk.

For this edition of the Real Gone Sessions, Vincent performs a previously unreleased piece entitled ‘Bamburgh Sands’, inspired by the village of Bamburgh in Northumberland. A simple tune, it carries the traces of Freddie Phillips musical scores that subconsciously influenced work on his earlier record ‘Rekindled’.

Watch: Led Zeppelin – Live @ Knebworth 11th August 1979

For a band that only existed during an era when filming concerts was both cumbersome and expensive, there is a fair amount of Led Zeppelin footage in the archives.  For years, all fans had to enjoy was the 1973 Madison Square Gardens material from the ‘Houses of The Holy’ tour – footage that Jimmy Page famously dislikes.

It felt like a minor miracle when, in 1989, the BBC showed footage of Zep in Denmark promoting their debut album.  The small stage, no frills show was a world away from the giant colossus Zep would become just three years later, but was no less thrilling.

Real Gone Sessions #2: Denny Smith – I Will

As we head into another week of isolation, Real Gone offers you another contribution to our new “Sessions” column.  Denny Smith, head honcho of The Great Affairs has kindly performed a stripped down version of his solo track, ‘I Will’.

A number originally written for piano and transposed to guitar, it works well in a light acoustic take and Denny’s no frills approach also brings out the heart of the song.

Listen: Without Whom – Tunes For David Horton

During Real Gone’s first decade, our website managed to pick up a lot of supporters.  From keen music fans, to labels and bands who loved what we did, every year seemed to gain momentum.  Among it all, between the famous bands, the DIY artists and labels, there had been an unsung hero.

David Horton, a keen music fan from the US, supported our site from somewhere close to the very beginning.  At a time when we wrote articles about albums we felt were overlooked and threw in the odd review for a new release, at a time when we only had support from a handful of regulars, David was there.
