THE REAL GONE SINGLES BAR: A NEW YEAR’S EVE LOCK IN 2024

Throughout 2024, we’ve featured literally hundreds of new tracks in our weekly Singles Bar column. Never committed to any particular style or genre, the SB has become a haven for any new tracks that have caught our ear, and we’ve introduced people to a whole spectrum of new bands. There wasn’t time to cast a spotlight on everything we loved, however. So, as we get ready to wave goodbye to another great year for music, we’ve brought together a selection of twenty five great tracks that slipped under the radar during the second half of the year. These are more than mere leftovers – every track deserves a loving ear. We’ve got singer songwriters; we’ve got melodic prog; we’ve got a couple of metal-centric workouts, indie bangers, and even a pinch of blues. This week’s visit to the Real Gone Singles Bar promises a whole world of variety. There are a couple of familiar names, but in terms of genre-hopping, the selection is very interesting. You’ll find something with a great pop heart, a track with a strong dance-oriented core, a slab of rockabilly from a band who last released an album forty years ago, some ska sounds that could well be boosted by a pair of massive Doc Martens, and more besides. IAIN MATTHEWS – Thro’ My Eyes: The Vertigo Years 1970-1974

After leaving Fairport Convention rather prematurely in 1969, singer songwriter Iain Matthews embarked on what was to be an epic musical journey. His first solo album ‘Matthews’ Southern Comfort’, released that same year, saw him venturing further away from folk and further into the realms of country rock and Americana, and two further albums released under the Matthews’ Southern Comfort band name cemented a warm, rootsy sound, eventually netting Matthews a UK #1 hit with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’, presented in the mould of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version. For the more casual observer, that will be the recording for which Iain is best known.
