There’s also the return of couple of underground talents, and also a really cool comeback single from a name that made waves back in the 90s. The Real Gone Singles Bar has always championed emerging talents, but in terms of doing so, this week’s column goes an extra mile, casting a spotlight on a couple of Scottish singer songwriters, a fantastic new track from a fantastic Irish performer and a US singer going against geographical location. For those who came to hear a couple of newer rock singles, we’ve got those too: one from a familiar name continuing their run of great releases, and one from a new band we hope will be big in 2027. Love Ghost’s ‘Revolution Evolution’ is a pleasingly chunky affair. The basis of the arrangement has a common root with some of the more industrial sounds from the Metropolis label, but the band uses that heavy, mechanical sound to build something more interesting. In places, a heavy, grinding riff touches upon a Rob Zombie-ish intensity, which coupled with a vocal that sounds like a distant relation of Marilyn Manson, creates something that lovers of 90s sounds will love. The real interest here, though, comes from the track’s quieter elements, in particular, a verse that couples a drawling, almost sneery vocal with a twangy guitar tone that owes more to a cinematic style. With a few of these elements heavily treated to bring a darker mood and with the melodies occasionally underscored by sirens, this creates a brilliantly unsettling listen and a perfect way to kick off the ‘Anarchy and Ashes’ EP, the LA-based act’s seventh release.
The opening riffs of Garrow Hill’s current single share more than a “standard” metal based sound. Yes, the chugging guitars have the heaviness and tone of a great metal performance, but they also have the abrasive edge of something industrial based, while the gruff vocal suggests more of a love of hardcore.
