Danish five piece Nord believe in metal with a captial M. They also appear to believe that the inclusion of hugely melodic passages is entirely necessary if they are to attract more than a niche audience. They’d be right to assume that, too, especially when their debut EP includes more than a little death metal throatiness.

EVIL REBORN – Throne Of Insanity
Formed in 2012, Venezuela’s Evil Reborn play a brilliantly constructed form of melodic death metal crossed with the heaviest strands of groove metal. Their third release, ‘Throne of Insanity’ – their first for Russian extreme metal specialists Satanath Records – is a belter. It might not be particularly original, but in terms of what Evil Reborn do, you’ll be hard pressed to find it done any better. Across the album’s nine tracks, the riffs are enormous, the amount of bottom end crunch is equally as ferocious and frontman Victor Chaparro settles upon a vocal style which – much like Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe – retains just enough clarity among the growls not to be an instant turn off.
VOICE OF THE SOUL – Catacombs
Forming in the late noughties when the band were just teenagers – young enough to rival Def Leppard in the precociousness stakes – Voice of the Soul always had very grand musical ideas. Following three self-released EPs between 2009 and 2011, the Middle Eastern extreme metallers found themselves in a great position to expand on their previous works. Taking to the studio in early 2014, the band set about making their first full length release – and in melodic death metal terms, the dark and sprawling world conjured up on ‘Catacombs’ does not disappoint.
Bloodshot Dawn: New album details and tour dates
UK extreme metallers Bloodshot Dawn are getting ready to unleash their ‘Demons’.
Following an appearance at the 2014 Bloodstock Festival, the band are now focused on promoting their upcoming second album. Funded by a Kickstarter campaign that reached its goal within four days of being launched, ‘Demons’ comprises eight slabs of metal delivered in just over forty minutes and features contributions from various guests including Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry), Chris Amott (Armageddon, ex-Arch Enemy) and Wintersun’s Teemu Mäntysaari.
WITHIN THE RUINS – Elite
Within The Ruins have seen many band members come and go over the years, they’ve won and lost record label support, but still, they’ve pushed forward never giving in. Their 2010 release ‘Invade’ found the band expanding from the melodic death metal roots and expanding their sounds to include elements of extreme tech/math metal and a pinch of industrial. The result was still uncompromising, but far more assured – even slicker (a relative term here, of course). With this album, it seemed very much as if years of hard work had paid off and Within The Ruins had truly arrived. If anything, this, their third full length album (and sixth release overall), improves on that…
