THE REAL GONE SINGLES BAR #119

Welcome back to the Real Gone Singles Bar, the place where we explore some of the individual tracks that have landed in our inbox over the past few weeks. Highlights this time around include an absolutely gorgeous, stripped down tune from a rising singer songwriter, some really quirky alt-pop, and country tinged pop workout that feels really positive. For those hoping to find something just a little tougher, there’s a pair of numbers that bring the sounds of 90s and 00s emo screaming into the present. As always, we hope you find something new to enjoy.

DETROIT RUN – Defiance Part One EP

Formed in 2022, Liverpool’s Detroit Run began their musical journey in a post-lockdown world at a time when a lot of other new bands were taking their first important steps, or a wealth of should have been established acts were rebuilding the momentum they’d lost from two years away from live audiences. The crowded alt-rock scene didn’t stop these lads making an impression, however. In three of those countries, it even reached the coveted top spot. Its peak of #7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 seems almost conservative by comparison, but the band’s career certainly began with a bang. A cover of Erasure’s ‘A Little Respect’ was also a hit and a debut album was well received, but as far as many people are concerned, Wheatus subsequently disappeared and are best remembered as a flash in the pan success, much like Deep Blue Something a few years earlier.

THE REAL GONE SINGLES BAR #85

For our first Singles Bar feature of 2025, we’ve brought together an interesting selection of tunes. You’ll find a “typical” Real Gone backbone of rock, but with the help of some great, spiky synth sounds, a couple of singer songwriters, and even a country infused bar room sneer from a familiar musical figure, there’s enough here to attract anyone with a curious ear. As we prepare to embark on another year of great musical discovery, we hope you find something of interest here!
