Following several EPs, new-wave revivalist Kurt Baker released his first full-length LP ‘Brand New Beat’ at the tail-end of 2012. It’s half hour of tunes recalled strong links with Joe Jackson, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello and often felt musically familiar, but was not any the less enjoyable for wearing its influences so obviously. The sessions also yielded a truckload of extra material; ‘Want You Around’, an upbeat number featuring Dan Vapid, provided the lead track of a 7” EP (and also appeared as a bonus track on the French CD pressing of ‘Brand New Beat’), backed with three cover tunes, including a spot-on version of Billy Joel’s ‘Sleeping With The Television On’. Discounting these four recordings, Baker was still in possession of an album’s worth of other tunes, most of which were collected on this 2014 release.

Electric Light Orchestra’s ‘Out of the Blue’ live DVD to get SD blu-ray reissue
A firm favourite among ELO fans, the bands live concert from Wembley 1978 is to be reissued by Eagle Rock on blu-ray in March. Given the archive nature of the material, the disc will not be in high definition (HD), but SB, upscaling the material to the best quality standards.
Given that SD isn’t always much of a step up from DVD, why should fans buy this reissue? The host of extras are worth the price of admission. In addition to the main feature – a fourteen song, hour-plus performance – there’s a whole lot more ELO to enjoy on the new disc.
Joe Lynn Turner to play UK acoustic shows
Legendary vocalist Joe Lynn Turner returns to the UK in April for a run of intimate acoustic shows where he will draw material from across his thirty year career.
While Joe has most recently been heard on albums by Rated X, Brazen Abbott and Sunstorm, for most fans, he is best loved for his three album stint with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow in the 80s, lending his talents to the classic ‘Difficult To Cure’ in 1981, before ‘Right Between The Eyes’ and the under-rated ‘Bent Out of Shape’.
