Exploring a variety of extreme metal traits and breaking up the intensities with elements inspired by soundtracks and world music, this 2018 release from Akhenaten is very interesting. It certainly isn’t your run of the mill death metal release. But then, you should expect nothing less than a sense of adventure and a progressive attitude from an album that “explores the forgotten paths of history” and is “steeped in the mythology of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia”.

PINK COCOON – Alienation
For the purposes of this studio recording, Montreal’s Pink Cocoon isn’t a band, but the work of multi-instrumentalist Zolla Marc. He’s a man who cites a fairly diverse selection of rock and blues acts among his influences, ranging from the predictable Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard, to the more unexpected – quite often, metal based performers won’t take time out to praise Robin Trower, especially when praise for Hendrix seems likely to get more attention. He also name-checks The Distillers and The Pretty Reckless among bands who’ve helped shape his playing and sound. For most stoner practitioners, the musical sphere starts with the first four Sabbath albums, moves into Hawkwind and then goes back to Sabbath’s ‘Never Say Die’…y’know, for variety, so while you’d be hard pushed to hear the influence from Brodie Dall or Taylor Momsen on this debut release, it’s still thrilling to know Zolla isn’t stuck in a musical rut.
HOOF GLOVE – Hoof Glove EP
What would happen if members of various Leeds-based hardcore and noise-rock bands came together in one unrelenting outfit? Something not far short of a musical armageddon would likely be the result. Featuring members of arty noise rock band Cattle and powerviolence/hardcore outfit Ona Snop and sludgers Groak, Hoof Glove are on hand with some aggressive sounds that listeners will either love or hate; sounds which – like Cattle – could possibly clear a room if an audience is less than receptive.
BAZOOKATOOTH – Bazookatooth EP
Nashville, Tennessee: home to country music, singer-songwriters by the million and a few notable power pop acts. Nashville, Tennessee: home to Bazookatooth, a lo-fi hardcore punk trio channelling the rawness of ‘Land Speed Record’ era Husker Du, the fierceness of early Dwarves and a whole world of attitude.
Hear the new single from Strange Majik
It’s been a busy couple of years for Strange Majik (aka David Pattillo). Starting with the release of 2016’s ‘Raised On Rock ‘N’ Roll’ (Real Gone’s favourite album of that year), Strange Majik began an exploration through various retro rock, blues and funk jams that reached fever pitch last year with two angry and politically charged EPs.
This summer, he embarks on his first European tour which is followed by the release of an anticipated new full length entitled ‘Channel T’.
Before the album’s appearance in September you can get a taste for Majik’s new jams, since a new single is available right now and streaming in full below.
