THE SPECIALS – Encore

In 2008, the original Specials (minus founding member Jerry Dammers) performed at Bestival. The event was quickly heralded by fans as an amazing experience and the following year, the band embarked upon a massive tour. For many, it was the ultimate nostalgia trip; for younger fans, a very welcome – and unexpected – chance to see the band fronted by the legendary Terry Hall, something unseen since the very early 80s. Sure, the band had made albums with varying line-ups throughout the years and even put on a great live show fronted by Neville Staple in the late 90s, but the classic line up of the Specials was special for a reason. A second full tour in 2011 was captured for posterity on the double disc ‘More or Less…The Specials Live’, giving those who couldn’t make the shows in person their own chance to hear Terry “enjoying himself first”.

Most would’ve predicted the reunion would then fizzle, but over the next few years, other live shows followed. Finally, in 2018, almost a decade on from the big reunion, there were mumblings of a new album on the horizon.

Snuff added to MPF (Manchester Punk Festival) line-up

First announced back in October 2018, the MPF (Manchester Punk Festival) is set to take place over the three days of Easter Weekend 2019. Among the first wave of bands confirmed were festival favourites King Prawn and Sonic Boom Six.

Several dozen bands were confirmed over the coming months including Samiam, Subhumans, Call Me Malcolm, Goober Patrol and up and coming ska band Millie Manders & The Shutup.

The final wave of bands – now totalling in excess of a hundred – has now been confirmed, adding the mighty Snuff to the line-up. A very welcome addition, Snuff are one of the funniest bands you’ll ever see. If somehow you’re going to this event and haven’t ever seen them, you owe it to yourself to right that wrong.

More details, plus a link to the website, can be found in the press release below.

Watch: Millie Manders and The Shutup share new video

Cross genre punks Millie Manders and The Shutup have shared a new video for ‘One That Got Away’ a few days ahead of their EP release, which you can watch in full below.

The new track shows the UK band throwing out some serious riffs and horns on a track that should appeal to fans of Save Ferris, Capdown and other great ska/punk sounds.  It promises very well for the rest of the EP, proving that the hard gigging act’s skills translate very well to the studio experience.

REAL GONE GOES OUT: The Selecter & The Beat (feat. Ranking Roger), Hall By The Sea, Dreamland, Margate, Kent 24/2/2018

If you grew up in the 1970s or 1980s in South East England, you’ll almost certainly have a fond memory of Margate. It probably involves a day trip to the beach, a bag of chips and a visit to the Dreamland Amusement Park. The town fell on hard times in the 90s, but with the opening of the Turner Contemporary art gallery and the arrival of small cafe’s and boutiques in the Old Town, things began to improve. The grand re-opening of Dreamland as a retro theme park was an essential part of the regeneration and has been great for the town. Its recently renovated facade in blue and yellow neon shines out over the sea and the seafront, once again, looks proud of itself. In addition to the theme park, the Dreamland complex includes a retro roller rink, a period restored ballroom and an upstairs area dubbed The Hall By The Sea for hosting live music. It’s almost certainly better than it ever was. Dreamland is brilliant and you shouldn’t let people try and convince you otherwise, especially those who haven’t actually been to Margate since 1996.
