The arrival of ‘The Bitter Remains of Human Consumption’ marks the end of a near five year silence from Devilz By Definition. However, within about twenty seconds of hitting the play button on their 2021 EP, it’s clear that they’re not approaching their return in a half-arsed way. The lead track ‘Time Is Near’ absolutely thunders from the speakers with a perfect blend that combines twenty first century thrash and groove metal with a metalcore attitude. Moving through a barrage of jagged and intensely heavy riffs, the band show a huge love for Lamb of God and the more melodic end of DevilDriver, often showcasing a really tight musical symmetry between guitarists J. Couvillon and B. Munro as they use their sharp style to lock into T. Robert’s drum groove.

Goregäng cover White Zombie classic; share vaguely NSFW video
On April 30th, death metal duo Goregäng will release their new EP ‘Long Live The Grime’. Ahead of that release, they have a treat for you.
Their current single ‘Electric Head Part 1 (The Agony)’ is a cover of the White Zombie classic, treated faithfully but injected with a Goregäng twist via a death metal inflected vocal. Perhaps what’s most impressive about their choice of cover is the guitar sound; they’ve absolutely nailed the bottom end sound from J. Yuenger’s guitar that helped make the original cut so distinctive. What’s more, they’ve given the new recording a send off with the kind of trashy (and vaguely NSFW) video clip that Rob Zombie would surely approve.
LORD – Undercovers Vol. 1
Covers albums can be a hit and miss prospect. For every band willing to take risks, there are three dozen hacking out uninspired versions of other peoples’ songs in the name of a quick buck. As proven by Jorn Lande, metal based covers albums can be an even trickier thing to pull off successfully, since not everything needs – or even suits – being “heavied up” in the name of entertainment. In fact, the experience of hearing Lande wail his way through Don Henley’s ‘New York Minute’ could be enough to put you off metal oriented covers albums for life…
Watch the new video from Ligature Marks
By mixing a huge slab of groove metal with a pinch of metalcore, Oregon’s Ligature Marks create an amazing sound on their current single ‘Noise In The Signal’. It’s the kind of track that all fans of the heavier end of the spectrum will love in a heartbeat.
SEA OF SNAKES – World On Fire EP
Although ‘World On Fire’ is the debut release from Californian metal band Sea of Snakes, the musicians involved are anything but fresh faced players just starting out. The core of the band have been fixtures on the stoner metal scene for years, but with ex-Saul of Taurus vocalist Tracy Steiger joining forces with Motorsickle guitarist Jim McCloskey and The Shrine’s Jeff Murray on drums, this is a band with the potential for outgrowing its roots. Sea of Snakes’ debut EP has moments that are far more intense than the gathered musos’ previous works allowed.
