In the 1990s, a deluxe edition (or special edition) album invariably meant a double disc set, ie: the original release plus bonus disc of rarities, b-sides and/or live tracks. In the 21st century, the big record companies have really expanded on this concept, with the “deluxe edition” now meaning multi-disc packages, in some cases retailing at a three-figure price point.

Less than a year on from the release of the deluxe edition ‘Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness’ five disc expanded edition, The Smashing Pumpkins have revealed the tracklisting for another multi-disc reissue.
R.E.M. ‘Green’ deluxe edition to be released in May
A 2CD deluxe edition of R.E.M.’s ‘Green’ will be released in May. Arguably the band’s finest album, the new edition pairs the original release with a disc of previously unreleased live recordings.
The newly released live gig was recorded live in Greensboro in 1989 on the penultimate night of the ‘Green’ tour.
