On her 2011 release ‘Cotton Skies’, jazz vocalist Emily Saunders applied her talents to something fairly traditional. On that album’s selection of (mostly) extended arrangements, she sang beautifully over smooth piano, evoking a smoky late night bar, or allowed her strong vocals to soar over some very melodic, more rhythmic fare, coming across like the missing link between Stacey Kent and Gretchen Parlato. 2016’s ‘Outsiders Insiders’ very much followed suit, cementing Emily’s talent and suggesting she’d be worth keeping an eye on, despite only releasing new material on a sporadic basis.

THE REAL GONE SINGLES BAR #105
With two very different jazz numbers, a slice of alternative metal with a theatrical quality, a strong offering from a cult singer-songwriter and a track that’s practically uncategorisable, the selection for this Singles Bar adopts a little more of a “go hard or go home” approach. By casting a light on a couple of the more adventurous tracks from the last couple of weeks, this bunch of tunes might take a little longer to make an impression, but we feel that every one of these artists is bringing something of great interest to the table. What’s more, it’s probably just the beginning of a great, creative period for some of the featured performers, whether genuinely attempting to push boundaries or choosing to share some solidly familiar riffs. As always, we hope you find something new to enjoy!

Featured at the Singles Bar this time around, you’ll find a couple of familiar names. You’ll also uncover a world of eclectic sounds ranging from jazz, to light country, to calypso. There’s also a really quirky piece of pop and an almost unrecognisable cover tune to be found amongst the eight picks. With submissions still coming in at a frightening rate, we’ve certainly not been short of musical choices, but we feel that these definitely represent some of the most interesting sounds to be found at present. As always, we hope you discover a new audio treat or two along the way.

Welcome back to the Real Gone Singles Bar, the place where we explore some of the individual tracks that have been sent our way over the previous few weeks. This selection takes in a couple of familiar acts – a massively cult Australian band, and someone making yet another return to the SB. As usual, the selection of tunes also explores a few slightly less familiar avenues. You’ll discover a slice of jazzy, downbeat singer songwriter fare, something with a strong soul bias, and even a new offering from a cult post punk act. As with the best previous Singles Bars, we’ve given no bias towards any particular genre, and feel that this particular selection really highlights how much good music has started to emerge now that 2025 is properly underway.
