In 2022, Hamburg based punks The Gents released their ‘Chop The Rot’ EP. It’s three tracks were rough and ready, but always conveyed a great sound. By taking influence from garage rock, 80s hardcore and punk ‘n’ roll, their energy focused approach injected new life into familiar sounds, and a knack for a sharp musical hook gave their material a real bite.

GONE STEREO – I’m So Sick / Cool Kids
Following on from ‘Don’t Think About You’ – a single that got a huge amount of attention from online radio station SiriusXM (home of Little Steven’s Underground Garage) – this double hit from Long Island pop-punkers shows off their gifts for very strong melodies in a manner that’s just as effective. Armed with a massive love of early Sum 41, The Ataris and middle period MxPx, the band’s mix of sun-filled sounds and semi-angsty lyrics is in a classic mould, therefore instantly familiar, but that in itself very much works to the material’s strengths.
THE BEATERSBAND – 52 Ways To Murder EP
The Beatersband’s third full length release – the aptly named ‘Vol Tre’, released in 2022 – was a really fun slab of punk ‘n’ roll. The Italian band put their own stamp on a variety of cover tunes ranging from Del Shannon to The Troggs, and although it could never claim to be “high art”, the DIY recording showed off some great bass work and enthusiastic vocals. In short, despite never aiming for perfection, the release made it easy to hear why fans of punk and high energy rock ‘n’ roll might love these guys.
IN THE PONDS – The Last Stop Ranch
On their 2022 release ‘Polar Night’, instrumentalists In The Ponds crammed a variety of musical moods into a very short playing time. Ranging from spooky, almost prog rock inspired echo driven guitar (‘Lonesome George’) to an atmospheric, David Lynch inflected ambience (‘Someone’s Always Watching’), and even supplying a nod to the distorted blues of The Groundhogs (‘Haruki On The Sand’), it was the kind of EP that created a great musical CV.
THE MATINEE – Change Of Scene
The Matinee’s 2017 album ‘Dancing On Your Grave’ was a great record. Its eleven songs bounced between upbeat pop rock tunes, retro rockers and music with an obvious nod to Americana, but felt like a really cohesive listen. Between some great chorus hooks, a heartfelt vocal and some fine guitar work, it showed off a mature sounding band whose songs could’ve existed at any point between the 90s and the present.
