The twenty second studio album from Yes, ‘The Quest’ demonstrated how the ever evolving and legendary prog band were still capable of making great music. With a delicate balance between soaring melodies and complex structures, the album harked back to classic Yes in many ways, but also showed how they refused to become stagnant.

For a rock band so well loved, Def Leppard aren’t often given the cover tune treatment. You might remember Emm Gryner’s excellent ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ on which, the Canadian singer songwriter gave the Leps’ huge hit the “full Tori Amos” treatment, or perhaps, you’re fond of Hayseed Dixie’s bluegrass take of ‘Photograph’, but for a multi-million selling band, reinterpretations of their work seem few and far between.

UK metal band Bang Bang Firecracker gained some very positive reviews for their ‘See Evil’ EP back in the summer of 2021. Deservedly so, since the Stoke On Trent based rockers showed a great affinity with a massive riff or three.
Ewan MacFarlane reflects on ‘This Year’ with new xmas single
With its easy blend of adult pop and narrative driven lyrics, Ewan MacFarlane’s debut solo album ‘Always Everlong’, released in 2021, set the Scottish singer songwriter on a very accessible musical path this year. Displaying the kind of talent that makes him appealing to a broad audience, it was easy to hear traces of Tom Petty in the title cut, but there was far more about the album’s maudlin moods that shared a heart with past works by fellow Scotsman Blue Rose Code, even without the material taking a pop/rock route rather than an obvious country influence. Whatever your take on it, the album – which took shape during the first lockdown of 2020 – couldn’t be any further removed from MacFarlane’s earlier recordings with Apollo 440.
Striker return with new single ‘Deathwish’
With a new line up and very melodic approach, the new look Striker sound absolutely fantastic on their current single ‘Deathwish’. The first new music from the band since their award winning ‘Play To Win’ album in 2018, the new track blends late 80s guitar riffs with a massive AOR chorus, resulting in a performance that calls back to the genre’s glory years.
