Listen: Pet Twin shares new single ‘A Soulful Day’, featuring Cate DeBu

James Gallagher, aka Pet Twin, has shared a few interesting tracks over the past year. Never content with sticking to one genre, previous Pet Twin fare has explored jangling indie sounds, dense shoegaze and even dreampop.

The current single ‘A Soulful Day’ reintroduces the dreampop element of the Pet Twin sound, but a really trippy approach to the arrangement ensures that it sounds very different to anything that’s been heard before from the Pet Twin stable.

Clean guitars set up a slow and mournful melody, calling back to the sounds of the early 90s and more specifically the 4AD label, whilst a dour lead vocal occasionally sounds more like an old Radiohead track that hasn’t quite reached full momentum. The minimalist arrangement serves both features brilliantly, but Gallagher goes an extra mile by bringing in guest vocalist Cate DeBu (also of The Subtheory) who augments the lead voice with a particularly haunting counter melody that’s just perfect for the dark, minimalist mood that gradually unfolds.

‘A Soulful Day’ does very little within its very succinct 1:55, yet at the same time, it provides a very atmospheric listen that manages to be just as captivating as previous Pet Twin works…if not more so. With very little to hide behind, this is the kind of track that really shows off Gallagher’s emerging talent.
