Bottlemoth’s debut single ‘Tattoo’ introduced listeners to a band who clearly understood the value in a great melody. A few months on, ‘Landslides (People Change)’ captures another really accessible guitar driven tune that’s just a little more thoughtful than most indie rock fare.
Opening with a chopping rhythm and huge guitar jangle, it kicks off with a definitely melodic intent, before everything falls away to reveal something a little more fragile. Against a semi acoustic, heavily strummed melody, frontman Ethan Proctor drops into a vocal that blends a light indie sound with folky tones, creating something a little more distinctive. The promise within Bottlemoth’s previous singles really makes good here, setting a melody in place that’s massively radio friendly. Chorus wise, the band reach for something a little bigger and a great indie-ish approach creates a sound that’s hugely contemporary, and even though the lyrics don’t have an immediate impact, Proctor’s sense of melody is strong enough to carry everything. The intro returns to link the verses very effectively, and the single already starts to feel complete, and hugely satifying.
The real magic happens just before the climax, however, when the band launches into a couple of big whoahs set against a rising riff which makes everything sound like a slightly chunkier version of early Coldplay, before the track is topped by a rousing melody that really aims to uplift the listener. There’s a lot here that feels familiar, but Bottlemoth have the confidence and a sense of style to make everything feel pleasingly contemporary. This deserves to be a hit.
