Back in 2018, singer Katy Hurt released ‘Revved Up’, a meaty sounding single that supplied some rather rocky guitars against a hard, curling voice that didn’t hide the number’s obvious country core. The track gained some popularity in country circles, and Katy went on to release a handful of other well crafted singles which showcased her strong voice – including the more old school and rather soulful ‘What Have You Got To Lose’ in 2023. Here’s something a little different. This 2024 revisitation of ‘Revved Up’ has been remixed by Gangstagrass and features a new vocal from R-Son The Voice of Reason.
It hasn’t just been rejigged, but rebuilt from the ground up. Katy’s vocal performance remains intact, but the strong guitar lines are nowhere to be found. Instead, her voice is joined by a bluegrass inspired melody which supplies a distinctive intro, before Mr. Grass goes to work, hitting the listener with a world of hard edged loops and glitched beats that are – more often than not – completely at odds with the remaining melodies. It isn’t a change for the better, even before reaching an unnecessary rap from R-Son The Voice of Reason drops in with a rap that sounds like an overspill from 2002. If it gets the song to a different audience, their work is done, but Katy’s extant fans, on the other hand, might not fully connect with what they find.
Obviously, different ears hear different things, but this is very much the kind of reworking that’ll split opinion, You can take a listen to the full track below.
