It has been confirmed that the legendary Joni Mitchell will issue a fourth box set in her ‘Archives’ series on October 4th 2024. The much anticipated set will cover rarities from the second half of her tenure with Asylum Records from 1976-1980.
In keeping with previous sets, the planned 6CD tome will be absolutely loaded with unreleased treats. In this instance, fans will receive a wealth of previously unheard live material, with much sourced from the ‘Hejeira’ tour of 1976. The advance tracklisting suggests that the only material that’s previously been widely circulated are recordings from the Bread & Roses Festival in 1978, which has been bootlegged, but never before available in an official capacity from Mitchell herself.
The news of this set comes just two weeks after Neil Young confirmed the release of his own Archives III release, which offered fans an unaffordable box set experience. As with Joni’s earlier archive offerings and unlike Young’s new set, ‘Archives 4’ hasn’t been extensively padded out with material fans already have – and in a lot of cases, have bought as an official release – and, although a little more expensive than her earlier sets, remains affordable to a huge number of her fans (this six disc set is expected to retail at somewhere in the £70-£80 mark, which is a bargain compared to Young’s current £300 tome, or £450 + import fees for the deluxe set).
The set can be pre-ordered from the Joni Mitchell website here, A full tracklisting can be perused below.
