Having gained airtime on Planet Rock and BBC radio and received positive press from Louder Than War and other sources, Healthy Junkies have already marked out a place within the underground rock scene, but their current single – the energized ‘Favourite Place’ – is the kind of track that could see the British based band score even more fans.
By opening with a sharp edged, repetitive garage rock riff, the track immediately advertises itself as something with genuine sense of drive, but once the drums kick in, everything steps up a gear. The bigger sounding guitars attack with ease, and although in some ways, they’re not always truly original when it comes to an actual riff, the way they compliment a heavily accented vocal (courtesy of Nina Courson) gives the number a very distinctive sound. As things progress, and the main riff adopts more of a punk ‘n’ roll aesthetic beneath a repetitive hook and the lyrics explore the positivity that sound and vision can have on a person’s mental state, this single shares a very addictive quality. There are fleeting moments where this even sounds like one of the best tracks Spinnerette never recorded. With boundless enthusiasm and a truckload of great riffs to share, ‘Favourite Place’ is destined to become a fan favourite in record time.
