Hear Sophia Marshall’s haunting version of ‘I Go To Sleep’

In February 2018, singer songwriter Sophia Marshall released ‘lin-dah’, a three track EP of Kasabian covers.  She was able to take the original material – including the massive hit ‘Fire’ – and strip it back to its core, resulting in recordings that found a place somewhere between folk and dreampop.  [A full review of the EP can be found here.]

Just weeks later, Sophia has released more cover songs, this time on a single relating to the much-loved Pretenders.  The first track is a semi-acoustic, semi ballad rendition of the hit single ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’.  In Sophia’s hands, the results veer closer to KT Tunstall than Chrissie Hynde…

The real draw from this free download, though, is the haunting and woozy, very 90s take on The Kinks’ ‘I Go To Sleep’ which in turn was recorded and turned into a hit by Pretenders in the late 70s.  With a quiet vocal set against disquieting, semi distorted guitars, it might be the best song within Marshall’s catalogue to date.   You can judge for yourselves, as the whole track can be streamed below.
