At the beginning of 2016, Wakefield’s Climbing Alice sounded like a force to be reckoned with on their ‘Melt Yourself Up‘ EP. Mixing alt-rock, goth and shoegaze noises, the four piece band created a great listen via a wealth of influences. There wasn’t so much in the way of immediate hooks or catchy melodies, but if it were a riff or six you craved, the EP – and band – came up winning pretty much every time.

Bob Mould and Grant Hart: Live on KEXP 2011/2013/2016
Earlier in 2017, the world lost Husker Du founding member Grant Hart. Along with guitarist vocalist Bob Mould, Hart arguably had the greatest influence on forming a sound the 90s would label “alternative rock”. Hart’s passing has seemingly allowed a lot of people – Real Gone included – to immerse themselves in the Huskers catalogue, and while the loss of Hart is immeasurable, the release of a Husker Du box set of rarities is something to celebrate.
Irish sludge band Zhora release new live video
Irish sludge metal merchants Zhora have recently posted a live video from this year’s Bloodstock Festival, which you can watch in full below. In the words of vocalist Colin Bolger, “Turmoil does exactly what it says on the tin. It takes you and your precious feelings and drags them through the mud and blood until you can’t take no more.”
SAINT RAYMOND – A Light That Blinds EP
Saint Raymond isn’t a band but the professional name of singer-songwriter Callum Burrows. He’s previously shared stages with indie pop press darlings Haim. He’s also shared a stage with the muchly over exposed Ed Sheeran, but you probably shouldn’t necessarily let that put you off. Saint Raymond’s 2015 release ‘Young Blood’ gained support from Radio 1’s Huw Stevens and even led to Burrows recording a session at the prestigious Maida Vale studio. With those credentials, there were high hopes for a second release and although only an EP, 2017’s ‘A Light That Blinds’ gives a good taster of more solid pop-rock.
God Damn unveil new video, announce short hiatus
They’ve had enough crossover appeal to play at both the Download and Reading/Leeds Festivals, shared stages with Foo Fighters and The Cribs and more. Wolverhampton’s God Damn have now unveiled a new video for the devastating ‘I’ll Bury You’, a track that combines noisy art-rock elements with a sludge-fuelled riff.
The video marks the end of the current chapter in the band’s history. They’re now about to take a short break and reflect before writing their next album.
