Kurt Baker is the very definition of “cult hero”. He’s played in various bands since the 90s and been a very active member of both the punk and power pop scenes. He knows most of your punk heroes personally…and yet, chances are, many of you will still be unfamiliar with his work. In July 2017, Kurt completed his first UK tour in several years, promoting the Kurt Baker Combo’s first studio release ‘In Orbit’. Real Gone met him at his Brighton stop for various drinks and a lengthy chat. Nothing was taken down formally. It was decided that upon Kurt’s return to Spain, we ought to get something on record for posterity, since the visit was an important one in his ongoing musical journey.

AS THE SUN SLEEPS – As Good As Gold EP
Since the turn of the millennium, a vast amount of music peddled as pop-punk hasn’t resembled the classic pop-punk sound of the nineties at all, but shifted rather more towards whining emo-dom or lightweight post-hardcore. The UK’s As The Sun Sleeps not only play pop-punk in the traditional sense, but are also bloody good at it.
New video from UK punk-poppers As The Sun Sleeps
We’re nearing the end of the year. It’s been a mixed bag.
2017 is set to begin in style when British punk-pop band As The Sun Sleeps release their new EP in January. It’s one of the best things to come out of the genre in a very long time, equal to classics from early blink-182 and Sum 41. If you can’t wait until the EP release, check out the new video for lead track ‘Beering’. It’s a really catchy track and a good indicator of the quality of the EP.
Stream the new single from pop-punkers ICYMI
With Paramore as an obvious influence and likened to All Time Low by the Punktastic website, Gloustershire pop-punkers ICYMI start out with their best foot forward in 2016. Their upcoming single ‘Get Out’ couples a lyric about mental health to a Tonight Alive inspired riff to create something punchy but very melodic.

GLENN ROBINSON – Everything Is Stupid EP
Glenn Robinson’s 2013 full length ‘Modern Mistakes’ was a great release. Packed with punky riffs, hooky choruses and a touch of new-wave sassiness, its ten songs zipped past in an “all killer no filler” fashion, representing the very best the style has to offer. This three track EP – issued as a stop-gap release before his next long player – presents three previously unreleased tracks of a similarly high quality.
