PINEAL – Smiling Cult EP

pinealPutting it bluntly, Pineal aren’t exactly shy with regard to their core influences on this release.  Although their recording budget occasionally shows a few limitations, this London-based trio really love Alice In Chains. Their stock riffs are never a straight up reconstruction of the AIC sound, though, since most of the heavier elements are more of a doom-rock persuasion, much slower in pace than AIC at their most sludgy…and certainly much heavier in many respects.  Any Alice In Chains homages are due to Daniel Murney‘s vocal style which – in more than a few places – really taps into Layne Staley’s trademark spooked out, nasal croon.

THE CREEP VOID – The Elevation Of Idiocy EP

ep-coverHailing from England’s North East, The Creep Void are an independent rock band trading in some great post grunge and alternative sounds.  While the core of their work owes a debt to the nineties, the quartet’s 2014 EP ‘The Elevation of Idiocy’ isn’t just a throwback to times of khaki colours and plaid shirts. There are certainly a few unavoidably grungy elements within these four tracks, but the song writing and tough sound places them firmly in the twenty first century – ever looking forward as well as drawing from their classic influences.

MARMOZETS – The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets

marmozetsSigned to Roadrunner Records at the tail end of 2013 on the strength of two demo EPs and a couple of independently released singles, Yorkshire’s Marmozets are a powerhouse of alt-metal and mathrock.  Their full length debut ‘The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets’ is full of great choruses, which combined with some tight musicianship results in an album with pretty much no weak elements.  While the studio recordings do not always entirely capture the incendiary power of their live act, the album’s thirteen numbers have a real sense of urgency and – more importantly – songs that really force their way into the subconscious.

ENGRAVED DISILLUSION – The Eternal Rest

engraved disillusionFollowing the release of Engraved Disillusion’s 2011 release ‘Embers of Existence’, there were a few upheavals within the UK metalcore band’s ranks. Parting ways with vocalist Chris Pugsley and bassist Matt Thomas left the band at a potential loss – parting ways with band members is often hard, but to lose a vocalist can be extremely difficult – but some excellent new blood was eventually injected into Engraved Disillusion’s ranks with the addition of Matthew William Mead and Aaron Preston.  These new members, as well as being more than up to the task of tackling the band’s older material, have very much helped a move forward with the inclusion of both throaty and clean vocals, giving the band a broader appeal than before.  Also, having noted producer and musician Karl Groom (best known for his work with progressive metallers Threshold and neo-prog supergroup Shadowland) on board for their second release has boosted their profile, not to mention given ‘The Eternal Rest’ a superb sound.
