Those who’ve been keeping a close eye on Brighton’s The Rattlebacks throughout 2024 will have witnessed a band seemingly going from strength to strength. Each of the singles released from their forthcoming album has found the band sounding much more confident than before. Blending elements of melodic hard rock and a pinch of grunginess, the band’s best songs have conveyed a broad sound, and with ‘Dementia Lounge’ especially, The Rattlebacks’ ability to combine absolutely killer late 80s/early 90s riffs with a vocal that celebrates a classic rock approach reached its peak.

THE RATTLEBACKS – Sidewinder
Since forming in 2021, Brighton band The Rattlebacks have worked incredibly hard to mark their place within the rock underground. Their debut EP ‘Kink’ shared a sound that mixed classic hard rock riffs with a pinch of melodic metal and grunginess to create something very broad but appealing. The release gained enthusiastic press from a few independent outlets, but as good as it was, it left the feeling that, in time, the band would unleash something much stronger. Continue reading
SUNBOMB – Light Up The Sky
Although the name Sunbomb might not be a massively familiar one on the rock scene in 2024, the band features a few familiar faces. Making up the core of the band, LA Guns guitarist Tracii Guns is joined by his old bandmate Adam Hamilton on drums, and taking on vocal duties, you’ll find legendary Stryper man Michael Sweet. This new band aren’t contemporary sounding, nor are they especially subtle, but Sunbomb were never likely to be either. According to Tracii, the main aim was to make the kind of metal album he “would have made at [the age of] seventeen”, back in 1983.

Brighton band The Rattlebacks aren’t messing around on their single ‘Over The Edge’. Taking huge cues from a classic hard rock sound and mixing that with vaguely grungy overtones, the track captures the band in blistering form as they work their way through a heavy, mid tempo riff.
PRAYING MANTIS – Defiance
With a run of enjoyable albums that began with 2015’s ‘Legacy’, Praying Mantis seemed to go from strength to strength over the following decade. Granted, a few of the tracks on that album and its successors (2018’s ‘Gravity’ and 2022’s ‘Katharsis’) were a little heavier sounding, but Chris and Tino Troy’s gifts for a strong melody continued to set the band apart from so many of the second tier acts associated with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and when dropping into numbers boasting more of an AOR/melodic rock hook, the band sounded as good as ever.
