FIVE YEARS: What a surprise… (An anniversary editorial)

5This weekend, Real Gone reaches a special milestone – five years of internet presence.  As that famous musical philosopher Mr. David Bowie once sang: “Five years…what a surprise.”  It’s been a really hard road to get so far, but it’s certainly been rewarding – over the recent years, we’ve met a bunch of really great people and heard some amazing music, a huge amount of which might have passed under our radar if we weren’t constantly reviewing stuff.  Who knows…maybe some of those albums would have passed under your radar too?

TAKE TURNS – Animal Fat EP

animal fatMusical fashions are cyclical. Like the 70s became very fashionable in the 1990s, the 1990s, in turn, have had a huge influence on some of the alternative rock sounds of the ’10s. Bands like Yuck can be found recycling the best elements of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr with sheer abandon,  the Bandcamp site is full of similar revivalist acts, while The Pains of Being Pure at Heart found critical acclaim channelling a very definite nineties indie jangle within their sound.  Take Turns, a Leeds based quartet are as guilty for shameless recycling, but like Yuck and Pains, their end sound is so full of love for those who’ve inspired them, it would take a hard heart not to enjoy their nostalgia trip.  On this six song EP, they’re none to shy about flaunting an absolute obsession with Pavement…

Lost Atlanta announce new single

Manchester-based post hardcore band Lost Atlanta have a new single ‘Into The Grey’ coming out on December 8th. The track features a guest guitar solo from Polyphia guitarist Tim Henson. According to the band, they are “currently writing a bunch of new songs [and] ready to hit the studio in the new year, to record a brand new EP.”

They also “plan to start branching out and playing new places around the UK“.

Hey Vanity unveil ‘The Life, The Party, The Scene’ video

Chelmsford rockers Hey Vanity have just unveiled a new clip for ‘The Life, The Party, The Scene’, a track from their mini album ‘Blindfolds’ (issued on Small Town Records earlier this year). According to band member Marc Halls, the track’s lyrical theme deals with “not being very rock ‘n’ roll at all” and has a video clip to match. The full video can be seen below.
