In June 2026, British band Forget Them Wendy released ‘Wise Guy’, a track that blended pop and indie with lax vocals to share something that, if not entirely original, came with just enough sparkle and sass to make it hold up on its own terms.
A few months on, and their ‘Next Big Thing’ offers more of the same…only better.
With immediate effect, the mechanical beats and buoyant bassline evokes an almost new wave-ish charm. Then, Forget Them Wendy waste no time in sharing the first of the track’s immediate hooks when the title is shouted, cheerleader style. Bringing in a shoegaze toned guitar adds extra retro charm, and by the time this gives way for a barrage of la la la’s, FTW ensure a lot of indie pop fans will be reeled in very effectively.
The arrival of the lead vocal brings the track much further in line with ‘Wise Guy’ since its semi-spoken delivery and generally very natural tones are hugely reminiscent of the more popular Wet Leg. Provided you can make it past that, this track goes from good to great, since the la la la’s reappear and offer an indelible presence, and the third hook shares a wonderfully sugary harmony. A couple of listens and it’s guarantee that lovers of alt pop and twee indie will discover that chorus really sticks.
This is easily one of Forget Them Wendy’s best records to date, It really deserves a place on any well-curated playlist as we head towards the end of 2026.
