Watch: Avery Friedman shares new video for ‘You Move’

In 2025, Avery Friedman released the excellent ‘New Thing’, a debut album steeped in a very nostalgic sound. The bulk of the release’s tracks hit upon a swooning indie tone, blending elements of dream pop into a light jangle which served the artist’s breathy vocal tones perfectly. The material wasn’t always about immediacy, but for those listeners willing to spend the time, it eventually became the kind of record that really rewarded those repeated listens.

Avery’s first new release in over a year, ‘You Move’ has a much bigger spark, creating the kind of number that can be enjoyed from first listen. Opening with a riff created from muted guitar chords, the music has a pleasing 80s new wave Cars-like quality, which Avery twists into a melody that’s more indebted to classic sounding early 90s indie. This is a perfect fit for a typically light vocal. That should be enough to reel in the listener, but the chorus takes everything a notch further, introducing a soaring vocal against a huge jangle, tapping into a superb pop-rock/indie hybrid that’s very infectious. A little less dream pop, a little more Liz Phair and Tanya Donelly; the tonal shift suits the artist perfectly.

A couple of listens to this track will uncover the underground hit of the autumn.
