The moment ‘Algebra (I’m On A Rage)’ crashes in with a busy riff and a full compliment of shouty gang vocals, it makes no secret of it’s more aggressive post hardcore influences. It’s not all about sharing a pointed world of noise, though; this single also presents a whole world of superb melodies which explore Ruled By Raptors’ complex style very effectively.

Once the vocals subside, a cleanish guitar line sets an almost circular riff in place, tapping into an almost alt-prog stance with influences from bands like Wot Gorilla, before a slower verse allows a clean vocal to take centre stage, drawing from second wave emo bands like the much missed Sense Field.

The noisier elements were never a red herring, however: the gang vocals are reintroduced to drive home the most unlikely of chorus hooks, and set against a busy guitar riff, this sells the core sound from Ruled By Raptors in a very smart way, blending art rock chops with post hardcore anger. Then having created something interesting, the track tops the more angular elements with cleaner harmony vocals, moments where the busier vocals are offset by a huge, clean wail, and a moment where the main guitar riff – in place of a more traditional solo – is underscored by a wall of keys, stoking up more of the post-rock vibes.

‘Algebra (I’m On A Rage)’ is a track that rarely settles. It’s also the kind of track that won’t necessarily be immediately appreciated by those who aren’t already huge fans of post-rock and post-hardcore sounds. That said, it’s never boring, or especially predictable, which creates a great listen in its own right.
