Phoenix metallers Incite have been releasing classic sounding thrash/groove based albums for over a decade, but their most recent, ‘Savage New Times’ is one of their best to date. Ploughing through ten heavy workouts in a little over a half-hour, the record is insanely tight. From the speed-oriented opener ‘Lies’ – playing like a cross between Soulfly and the faster elements of Testment – to the groove laden ‘No Mercy, No Forgiveness’, to the heavy, rhythmic title track that showcases a sharper guitar tone for its first half, before tipping the hat very obviously in the direction of Soulfly for a much moodier climax, it’s a record that never lets up.
Tying in with the band’s tour dates supporting Soulfly and the uncompromising Nailbomb – making for a full-scale Cavalera-themed experience – the band have issued a lyric video for ‘Chucked Off’, which can be seen in full below.
In terms of providing a very effective glimpse of the album overall, it’s a perfect choice of track. From its opening bars which bring trad metal tones to more of a groove metal sensibility, thtough chunky sounding verses where an off-kilter time signature powers a fantastic sounding pneumatically driven drum part and into an instrumental break where the band explore their thrash-based roots contrasted with some old school twin guitar sounds, this is a genuinely exciting workout. And that’s before taking a guttural vocal performance into consideration: Richie Cavalera’s delivery is absolutely perfect for the job in hand.
