Since their formation, Young Martyrs have been a reliable source for great singles. In particular, ‘Everyone Else Disappears’ presented a great radio friendly pop rock sound that provided an easy entry point into the band’s catalogue with its very melodic, chorus driven approach, while the Americana themed ‘Never Gave You The Blues’ offered a more mature angle in terms of songwriting, and the more recent ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’ flaunted a more epic sound with its use of contrasting power chords and harmony driven vocals. All three of these recordings shared elements which could’ve been the work of three different bands, but in their own way, each showcased Young Martyrs as an act to keep an ear for in future.
Hot on the heels of ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’, ‘Sugar On My Tongue’ takes a slightly different route yet again, but is no less impressive. From its opening bars with muted chords tapping into a great pop-rock sound, coupled with blues tinged lead guitar, its a track that flaunts a confident edge, but it grows into something far greater than first impressions even suggest. As the tune motors forth and the melody swells, vocalist Tom Corneill breaks into a really soulful performance that sounds like something from decades past, in a perfect synergy with the retro guitar sound. Then, having grabbed the listener’s fullest attention, the chorus arrives, and Young Martyrs explode into an absolutely joyous affair that invites its audience to sing loudly, sharing something that finally blends the band’s love of melodic rock, country rock and classic sounding AM radio pop into a something that’s almost perfect.
As a preview of the band’s third album ‘Might Just Be Enough’ – due for release in the summer of 2026 – fans and first time listeners really couldn’t ask for anything more appealing. ‘Sugar On My Tongue’ is a track that deserves to make this Bath based act a genuine household name.
