During the last quarter of 2025, desert rock duo ‘SoftSun’ released their second album ‘Eternal Sunrise’. Since their debut LP was a near flawless slice of deep psych infused desert/stoner, there was a great deal riding on ‘Eternal Sunrise’ in terms of overall quality, but it’s fair to say that it was everything fans of the debut could’ve hoped for.
As part of the album’s ongoing promotion, ‘Anywhere But Here’ has just been released as a single, along with an accompanying visual. It’s one of the album’s lighter numbers, but still conveys the signature SoftSun sound very effectively. In relation to some of the album’s deeper cuts, it has a busier arrangement, a wealth of cleaner guitar sounds and a stronger influence from dream pop added to the desert vibe. Gary Arce’s multi-layered guitars are rather dominant at first, but given time to adjust they sound great weaving in and out of a spooky vocal, and likewise, the tribal drumming at the heart of the track – always helping to bring a feeling of motility – is absolutely spot on. The extra drums and more palatable tempo definitely help this track to be one of SoftSun’s most accessible numbers. It may be half the length of most of their works, but that only makes it feel much sharper.
Despite the music offering some of this album’s most appealing melodies, it’s Pia Isaaksen who steals the show here, adding a vocal that’s unhurried. Her gothic influenced cry never seems to entirely fit the music, yet at the same time, sounds absolutely perfect in its role to bring an otherworldly element to the piece.
You can check out the track below. If this happens to be your first exposure to SoftSun’s blend of desert haze, stoner atmospherics and vaguely psychedelic tones, there’s every chance you’ll find yourself wanting to hear more, and subsequently backtracking to experience both albums. It’s definitely worth the trip.
