German thrashers Vulture release their tenth anniversary anthem ‘Power Thrash’

Despite forming in 2015, German thrashers Vulture have always celebrated the sounds of 1987. Never was this more blatant than on their current single, the fittingly titled ‘Power Thrash’.

Released digitally to celebrate the band’s tenth annivarsary, the three minute blast opens with a barrage of drums and a razor sharp guitar riff that brings together the finest thrash and speed elements, before a piercing scream really cements the shamelessly 80s feel. Within a few bars, this is the kind of track that absolutely pummels the audience into submission.

The arrival of a gruffer vocal doesn’t really add anything more contemporary – that’s really not the remit here – but it does bring a vaguely more hardcore aspect, without drawing anything away from the absolutely perfect thrash riff that’s really taken hold. Factor in a couple of absolutely brutal lead guitar breaks and a simple hook that very much takes its cue from the “knockabout” thrash anthems of yesteryear (Anthrax’s ‘Metal Thrashing Mad’ and Exciter’s ‘Stand Up And Fight’ might spring to mind) and this becomes a near perfect celebration of Vulture’s tightly played and very retro sound.

In thrash terms, this is a fantastic throwback, but for those who were in their teens when the genre was at its creative peak, it’ll also provide a gargantuan jolt of nostalgia.
