At the beginning of February 2025, art rock band Ecce Shnak released their ‘Shadows Grow Fangs’ EP, their first new work for many years. Between the bendy experimentation of lead single ‘Jeremy, Utalitarian Sandboy’ and a couple of other uncategorisable tunes, it really didn’t disappoint.

It also threw up a massive surprise. In addition to a world of musical experimentation, in ‘Stroll With Me’, the band also proved they were capable of sharing strong, accessible melodies, should the mood feel right. With its combination of folk influences and syrupy vocal, ‘Stroll…’, in many ways, makes a perfect single. It isn’t necessarily representative of Ecce Shnak in full flow, and certainly isn’t representative of even the best bits of ‘Shadows Grow Fangs’, but approached as a stand-alone listen, it conveys an almost timeless dark beauty where influences from the late 60s meet with a Tindersticks-ish warmth. Simply put, it’s a great single.
