In 2022, British metal act Skye released their ‘Foundations’ EP, which shared three contemporary sounding tracks, blending a pleasingly heavy tone with a melodic core that advertised them as the kind of band who’d have a crossover appeal.
Two years on, and their current single ‘Lost Memory’ presents a rather different sounding band. The heavy edges are much sharper; there are touchstones throughout the track that suggest a love of metalcore and progressive metal bands, and the use of drum triggers gives the heaviest riffs an even sharper edge. Extant fans shouldn’t be too worried, however, since a filtered vocal and a broad, soaring melody that take centre stage on a massive chorus more than prove the old Skye aren’t completely gone.
Falling somewhere between a heavy emo band, TesseracT, Hollowkin and the earlier Skye sounds, ‘Last Memory’ is huge sounding throughout, occasionally edgy, but always showcases a very confident band, keen to move forward.
