Noise rock duo Canyons And Locusts hit several peoples’ musical radar back at the beginning of 2024 when they assaulted unsuspecting ears with the pleasingly noisy ‘Love Goes Down The Drain’, a trashy yet smart anti-valentine.
They’re back with the even sharper ‘Anna Save A Life’, a track which really embraces the layers of fuzz within their no-frills sound. From its opening barrage of muted guitar chords throwing out a pseudo-punky riff, the number promises great things, then as it explodes into a world of heavy fuzz bass and drawled vocals, the power in the duo’s brand of retro noise becomes truly apparant. As the song progresses, it becomes more about riffs than lyrical hooks, but manages to retain a sharp edge that’s more than reminiscent of classic garage punk sounds. On a basic level, this makes it the ultimate Canyons track, even if it’s only ever the boistrous edge that leaves an impression.
In and out in under two minutes, ‘Anna…’ really doesn’t hang around. In that respect, it’s a very effective vehicle for showcasing the duo’s angry sound and retro qualities. If you’ve not heard Canyons And Locusts yet, despite the less than immediate lyrical hook, this would be a more than suitable place to dive in.
