The new single from Transport League is a riff-centric beast that should appeal to a huge cross section of the rock and metal audience. A very cold and mechanical feel employed during the intro suggests something with an industrial heart, but the track ultimately blossoms into something very different.
After a massive musical red herring where programmed beats are augmented with the rattle of a tambourine, the guitars kick in to deliver a massive groove metal riff. The dirty tones have a serious amount of weight, reinforced by a downtuned tone, but there’s also a huge melody that plays out when the main groove hits upon something that sounds like ‘Vulgar Display’ era Pantera reworked by a peak Rob Zombie.
The relentless chug and roaring vocal would be more than enough to make ‘Primate Apeshit’ work, but Transport League bring far more to the table than mere recycling. A bigger and more melodic chorus adds a layer of something that falls between the southern rock of Zakk Wylde and a haunting nu metal workout, and a huge, cleaner sounding lead guitar break adds an unexpectedly old school moment or two, giving the track more of a commercial edge.
There’s a lot of good stuff pulling together to make this number memorable, but if anything sticks here, it’ll be the repetitive chorus hook, which is used to create a massive climax. The combo of groove laden riffs and hardcore infused shouts come close to sounding like peak Transport League, giving the track a catchy send off that’ll definitely resonate with fans.
