Australian singer songwriter Helen Townsend has already released a run of great singles. More impressively, every one has been different from the one before.
‘Is This Love’ presented Helen in full country mode, it’s upbeat rhythm offering a jaunty two-step; ‘Battlefield’ offered more of a low-key confessional, taking her into more of a thoughtful and almost maudlin musical sphere. Better yet, ‘Melbourne Streets’ blended a rootsy sound with a smoothness, casting Helen as someone worthy of picking up the mantle left behind on Mary Chapin Carpenter’s ‘Under These Rocks & Stones’.
‘Baby Come Home’ retains Helen’s country tinged vocal, but she applies her natural style to a tune that sounds a little like a rhythm & blues throwback. A rolling piano is augmented by great brass, and a huge melody swell with a feelgood style throughout,
The main melody shares a style that’s more in keeping with Van Morrison putting his mark on an old soul number. Whichever way you slice it, this a magical single that aims to uplift, and showcases a fantastic backing band as much as Townsend’s own talents.
Helen’s long awaited full length album is released on August 2nd, but in the meantime, ‘Baby Come Home’ could just be Townsend’s best track to date. Watch the full clip below.
