A run of planned live gigs may have been off the table, but it’s been a busy year for Justine Covault. With her band Justine And The Unclean, she’s released a couple of great digital singles. She’s embraced country music with a new side project, Justine’s Black Threads. She has even hosted ‘The Mess Around’, a bunch of online live performances with friends, including power pop legend Kurt Baker and Tom Baker from The Dirty Truckers.
On top of that, Justine has just launched a brand new, independent record label. Red On Red Records will be releasing new music from Covault, but already has a few other great artists on its roster. More news on the label can be found in the below press release.
One of the first releases from Red On Red Records is a recording of ‘Angels We Have Heard On High’ by Justine’s Black Threads. In Justine’s own words, it’s been reworked in a “rollocking Bluegrass style” and can be downloaded here.

About Red on Red Records
Red on Red Records is Justine’s latest adventure in rock and roll collaboration. She describes the label’s inception as follows: “The idea sprang from a conversation I had with Lou Mansdorf of the fantastic Rum Bar Records label. He’s been a friend and mentor to me, and he encouraged me to take the energy I have for collaborating with and supporting fellow rock musicians and other creative types and start my own venture. I’ve learned a lot in recent years in developing my two bands (Justine and the Unclean, Justine’s Black Threads), building a successful monthly residency that spotlights talented guests and collaborative musical combos (The Mess Around), and co-founding a female-powered regional rock festival and musical community (WhistleStop Rock). I’m looking now to take everything that I’ve learned, and everything that inspires me, to the next level, with this amazing roster of mutually supportive and collaborative bands.”
The bands who will be part of the Red on Red family to start are: The Neighborhoods, Nightspell (Seana Carmody from the Swirlies and Joyce Raskin from Scarce), Kid Gulliver, The Chelsea Curve, Cold Expectations, Justine and the Unclean, and Justine’s Black Threads. The label has also signed Berk/Lehane, a collaboration between Simone Berk (Kid Gulliver, Sugar Snow) and Jerry Lehane (The Dogmatics). See appendix for detailed info on each band. The label will launch with digital singles for each artist in late 2020/early 2021. Full length release, including vinyl, will follow later in 2021.
