Taking elements from indie, shoegaze, pop and rock, Coming Up Roses have a rich sound that is often pleasingly varied. Although various musical influences can be heard within the UK band’s work, they use those in a way that is often interesting – and on their ‘I’m In Bed’ single (released in the early part of 2025), they sounded like no-one else. Further singles ‘Tired’ and ‘Over My Head’ cemented any feelings that Coming Up Roses were a band on the rise, and their full length album ‘How Did We Fall So Far?’ (released in June ’25) showed how the band weren’t just suited to soundbites; their best songs have a rich quality, playing brilliantly as part of a longer format.

Watch: Wax Mechanix shares new video clip for ‘Saltwalter Sisters’
Those who’ve been paying attention to the rock underground over the post-lockdown years will probably be aware of Wax Mechanix. The multi-instrumentalist has released a succession of great sounding, retro influenced tunes – and here’s another.
In the artist’s own words, it’s “a unique heavy jam”, and it’s easy to hear what he means. The opening riffs play off a bluesy melody, but the semi-busy acoustic slant gives the melody the kind of feel that seems a little proggy. Moving into the meat of the track, programmed loops and a chunkier riff lend a little influence from early Beck, but a huge vocal ensures any simarities end there.
The Astronauts share new video for ‘Ease Up’
On their current single ‘Ease Up’, The Astronauts deliver an unashamed love letter to the early 90s. From the moment the main melody hits, the layers of sound tap into a heavy indie/shoegaze sound that’s unmistakeably retro. The tune is also massively appealing, but it’s likely to require three or four listens before this becomes really obvious.

When it comes to reaching for a heartfelt sound, Noah Villeneuve isn’t holding back. His debut solo recording ‘Kneejerk’ begins slowly, presenting his rich vocal tones almost unnacompanied. Bringing in slow, acoustic strums, the melody builds, but clearly aims to draw in the audience gradually. Noah isn’t out to wow people with massive hooks, but to make them…listen – a gift that seems to be fading in this world of short attention spans.

It didn’t disappoint. Taking in elements of surf rock, noisy indie, melodic punk and a couple of other retro twists, the album showcased an artist will a brilliantly malleable talent.
