Oui Plastique have already released a couple of very interesting singles in 2026, but their current release ‘For The Cry of Anguish’ is arguably one of their strongest – and certainly their most commercial sounding.
With immediate effect, the pulsing synths and almost light goth tones evoke classic Depeche Mode, serving up a ‘Black Celebration’ era sound, with sharp tones and beats contrasting a slightly mournful vocal. It doesn’t take long at all before this track asserts itself as near perfect retro synth pop, and that position is clear long before the track’s vocal hook actually takes a hold.
Moving between dark tones and a lighter melody, the arrangement here proves that a sense of drama can be created even when working within a relatively simple framework, and even though the lyrics deal with emotional turmoil and pain, the overall mood captures a dark beauty that’s almost peak Oui Plastique. With the crooned vocal later balanced by harsh almost rock voice, it’s clear that care has been taken to ensure the unfussy arrangement also comes with just enough extra layers to maintain listener interest throughout.
For lovers of the style, the relatively sparse feel of the music will certainly appeal, but it’s the way the vocal strongly leans into a sadness that faintly echoes Depeche’s ‘A Question of Lust’ that’ll ultimately sell this track to many. It brings this performance a genuine richness that really captures the heart within Oui Plastique’s otherwise fairly cold sound.
