In the spring of 2026, a year on from stand-alone track ‘The Insane Ones’, alternative rock band Amongst Liars released an enjoyable single, ‘Repair Myself’, it showed the UK act in better shape than ever when blending a fuzzy groove-laden heaviness with an almost industrial tinged mechanical quality at times, whilst clinging onto some strong vocal melodies that really helped the track become memorable.

‘Underneath The Surface’ feels just as abrasive at first, since it weaves a distorted guitar into a hard rhythm. Then, somewhat unexpectedly, the number breaks into a very melodic emo-tinged verse, allowing an emotive and clean vocal to join a solid drum part. It’s not a really commercial track, however, since a strong chorus is underscored by the band’s signature heaviness, and the middle section of the number introduces more of the band’s familiar Royal Blood-esque punchiness, allowing the bass and guitar to adopt more of a crushing presence.

Despite its moments of enjoyable heaviness, ‘Underneath The Surface’s biggest strength is its concession to melody. Leo Burdett’s vocals are excellent, and the way they’re pushed into some well executed soaring melodies shows Amongst Liar’s moving in a slightly more mature direction, but without completely surrendering their signature sound. This is definitely the kind of track that’ll secure new fans.
