Listen: Shapes Like People share ‘Lately’, a great new single ahead of an album release

Those paying attention to the UK’s indie, shoegaze and dream pop scenes early in 2026 might have already discovered ‘Find Me There’, a fantastic track from Wiltshire based Shapes Like People. A fantastic single that sounded like the perfect dream pop throwback to 1993/1994 with its Cocteau Twins inspired shimmering guitar lines and clean vocals, it suggested that the upcoming Shapes Like People album would potentially be great.

This follow up single shows a slightly different side to the band, but is just as much of a high quality. ‘Lately’ opens with a huge guitar strum and ringing tone that immediately advertises Carl Mann’s retro indie interests, but from there, branches out into even more of a retro sounding melody once the vocals arrive. Adopting a flowing tone and a great harmony, Carl and his wife Kat serve up a sound that conveys a mood that’s wonderfully dreamy and a melody that’s almost summery. It’s as if the Boo Radleys have hit upon an old Everly Brothers melody and brought it fourth into the mid 90s to fill out one of the greatest b-sides ever.

The blend of the Manns’ vocals on the quiet verse are superb. Although Kat’s lighter registers, naturally, appear to take centre stage, the track has been mixed in such a way that Carl’s very natural sense of melody also plays a vital role, and when the band stretch out into a louder chorus, he really comes into his own on more of an indie-centric sound. Throw in an unfussy yet perfectly pitched lead guitar break and a feeling that, by the time it makes its last appearance, the chorus somehow sounds even bigger, and this becomes the kind of single that is very broad in appeal for fans of the style.

Carl says, of ‘Lately’: “Over time I think this has become my favourite song on the album, there are more instantly accessible tracks but I find ‘Lately’ one of the most rewarding listens that sticks in my mind. Even though it’s about those dips in mood and sometimes the overpowering weight of life, it’s therapeutic and was a real joy to write and record.

Kat adds: “The lovely thing about this track is that many will find something relatable within the lyrics. I love the opening lines… ‘Caffeine kicks in too slow’ – story of our lives! Some days can be a slog, but it’ll always be alright – especially if you’re fortunate enough to have found someone to spend both the good days and the tough ones with.
