In terms of post rock/post metal, Nothing3000 pull no punches. On the project’s current single, ‘3’, the musicians take the expected post metal traits into some seriously heavy places. They understand that the heavier moments will only have the desired impact, of course, if offset with a strong sense of melody, and this track brings plenty on that score too.
Opening with a cold guitar sound throwing out huge notes beneath an equally big and almost tribal sounding drum part, ‘3’ immediately grabs the attention. There are strong post rock tones from the outset, but combined with a darkness that suggests a love of older goth metal, the number kicks off with a melody that’s a little more accessible than a lot of other post rock and metal fare.
It doesn’t last. A few bars in, the post metal melodies give way to a sludge metal riff that’s delivered at a speed more associated with hardcore. This shares an absolutely brutal sound that, alternating with the original goth-esque riff, creates a great sense of unease.
Eventually, unease turns into despair when a massively sludgy riff returns to be complimented by a few industrial overtones. It’s here that Nothing3000 hit peak heaviness, and those who’ve already found interest in this track will ultimately fall in love with it. The decision to contrast the hugely heavy groove with a relatively clean lead guitar shows off the musicians’ love of huge soundscapes even more clearly, too, with a world of sound that – although very different – captures a similarly epic feel to the track’s main riff.
There are traces of Russian Circles here, even a pinch of bands like Isis, but Nothing3000 continue to plough an even heavier path towards building an audience. Lovers of the heavier and less “proggy” end of the post rock spectrum should check out this track immediately. It promises great things ahead.
