Listen: Lunison deliver funky rendition of Prince’s classic ‘When Doves Cry’

In the summer of 2025, Lunison released ‘Fakepink’, a debut album that showcased a variety of rock and pop styles over the course of a very tight half an hour. There were moments when the record sounded like the work of a couple of different bands, but due to the obvious love the band showed for their work, the potential lack of flow never hampered the listening enjoyment.

Continuing their commitment to sucking up different influences like a sponge, Lunison’s current (non-album) single pays homage to a bona fide legend. They have taken the Prince & The Revolution classic ‘When Doves Cry’ and made it their own.

Following a howling lead guitar intro, in keeping with the original, the track veers off into an arrangement that draws more from funk than the classic pop sound of the Prince cut. This shift comes through most obviously via the main riff which has been transposed from keys to guitar, and the bright, chopping sound gives this recording a great energy. It sounds especially cool when joined, somewhat briefly, by a soaring lead with bluesy undertones, since this very much captures the heart of ‘Fakepink’s best work.

By the mid point, it’s clear that giving this well loved number a funk rock edge really works, and that’s before the guitars crank themselves a little harder to compliment a slightly more aggressive vocal in the second half, and a busy lead guitar sweeps across the choppy melody with a huge confidence, almost more in line with a classic Blues Traveler recording.

For those who’ve yet to discover Lunison, this pleasingly rocky take on ‘When Doves Cry’ will provide a superb introduction, and for those who’ve already been won over by the band’s album, this will supply some rather excellent further listening.
