In a year that saw a much overhyped Oasis reunion and an even more unlikely return for Britpop heroes Gene, Breeze mightn’t have been the most talked about band, but the three lads from Hull began 2025 by sharing one of their strongest singles to date.
‘Devils Hymn’ made an instant impression with its bombastic intro, coupling heavy beats with a huge sounding, blues rock influenced guitar sound. The absolutely crushing groove gave a brief insight into how Royal Blood might sound with a fierce lead guitarist, or if The Stone Roses’ ‘Love Spreads’ were to inspire something with a little more muscle. The song’s verses explored a more melodic sound, taking cues from more of an indie rock influence, dropping more than a hint of Embrace into an already potent mix. It’s no wonder the band had built up a reputation as a live act.
Their current single, ‘Song For A Sign’ – created in collaboration with Embrace’s Richard McNamara – takes a more melodic turn, but still finds time to share some of that huge guitar sound that helped ‘Devils Hymn’ to shine. The louder guitar is used very effectively during the intro, laying down a very chunky riff and overlaying that with a semi-bluesy lead, but from there, the number takes a couple of very dramatic twists. The verse takes on more of a rhythmic feel, adding a hint of influence from Kasabian, showing how tight a musical unit Breeze can be, but this single really takes off when hitting a chorus that’s absolutely brimming with harmony vocals, sharing a sound that’s absolutely tailor made for radio. Everything combines to create a massively hooky track that would’ve been a certified hit in the last days of Britpop, or perhaps would have lent a massive kick to the guitar driven scene at the turn of the millennium, outshining many of those band’s sarcastically – and unfairly – dubbed “landfill indie” by the likes of NME. In the present, ‘Song For A Sign’ still sounds like an absolute smash.
Their busy journey to reach this point has seen the three brothers – Albert, Harry and Alfie – share stages with Royal Blood, Kasabian, The View, James and various other well known acts, picking up new fans along the way. On the basis of ‘Song For A Sign’, Breeze should definitely be on your list of bands to watch out for in 2026.
