Listen: Skye share new track ‘What Am I’

A five piece band from the north west of England, Skye take in a wealth of hard rock, prog metal and alternative influences to create a massive hybrid sound.

On ‘What Am I’, the quiet, almost disquieting vocals and busy basslines owe a debt to the mighty Tool; a massive, relatively commercial chorus pulls influence from bands like Alter Bridge and Shinedown, and a really punchy drum sound adds something even harder. These things combined lead to a massive and genuinely impressive slide of contemporary metal that’s guaranteed to build upon the current Skye following.

The number mightn’t feel quite as metal oriented as earlier single ‘I Thought You Might’, but there’s a wealth of interesting sounds explored throughout. From the groove laden intro taking influence from A Perfect Circle, through an atmospheric verse where a slightly mumbled lyric jostles against a frantic bassline and into a hooky chorus, the band takes their audience across three very different musical landscapes almost seamlessly, but things don’t settle there. During the second half of the number, a harder edged guitar sound introduces an instrumental section where Skye blend classic prog metal traits with a dirty metalcore tone.

You won’t find the expected lead guitar break here, or any other huge soloing, but the track doesn’t suffer for that. The relative lack of showboating really allows the listener to be pulled by the massive, dirty riff and really appreciate how Skye have taken some fairly key influences to create something that still sounds fresh at the time of release. It’s no surprise they’ve already gained solid support from BBC Introducing in the lead up to this release. Audiences will certainly be hearing more from these guys throughout 2025.
