After breaking through with their ‘Isolation’ single in 2023, Common Tongue set upon a musical journey where huge riffs would reign. It was immediately clear that the duo – hailing from Southsea, on the south coast of England – were capable of summoning the fire and fury of a full band set up, and the huge swagger at the heart of that debut might find an audience among the lovers of Royal Blood and early Muse.
A couple of further singles emerged in 2024, with each one cementing the feeling that this new act more than knew their way around a weighty sound. The slower, moodier ‘Blackout’ showed off an even more obvious love of Muse, but with a mid tempo groove and an almost stoner infused fuzz informing the core of the performance, it was also clear that Common Tongue were able to take their influences and twist them into something powerful of their own, and the moodier sound presented here also showed off Matt Thompsett’s voice in even more of an assured fashion.
Preparing to leave 2024 with a bang, their new single ‘Done’ captures a fat bottom end from the outset. With an extra layer of fuzz, Thompsett’s guitar evokes the sound of a bass, before exploding into a whole world of dirty garage rock grooves infused with a stoner rock vibe. It’s almost impossible to ignore the influence from the overhyped Royal Blood here, but in reworking a similiar sound against another Muse-esque vocal, Common Tongue bring more bombast to a familiar fuzz rock backdrop. The drumming is equally impressive throughout with Matt Winterman peppering a heavy rhythmic sound with quirky little percussive twists, as if Neil Peart’s intro to Rush’s ‘Passage To Bangkok’ keeps popping up unexpectedly. Factor in a chorus that allows both the vocal and guitar to explore higher tones, and this single gives one of the most well-rounded examples of the Common Tongue sound to date.
