Between the arrival of a new album from Silver Dollar Room and a new single from up and coming band Wird, it’s started to feel as if the last quarter of 2024 is spawning a grungy revival. Here’s something else that fits the bill. Aussie rockers Hello Enemy can be heard channelling Silverchair on bits of their current single ‘Hit Or Miss’.
The main guitar riffs hit the listener with a huge and dirty sound that’s given a little more punch than the style would normally have. This is partly due to a great drum sound that delivers a heavy rhythm throughout, but avoids being leaden thanks to more of a groove oriented fill or two, but also thanks in no small part to a strong vocal where rough elements have a slight garage rock air in their delivery.
The great music wouldn’t necessarily work if the song didn’t have a huge hook, and Hello Enemy more than cover that remit with a simple worldless “na na na”. It could seem cheesy, but the poppier element to the hook contrasts the main riff brilliantly, and its delivered with a proper confidence, ensuring that Hello Enemy’s retro brand of rock really sparkles. What’s more, the band hits their intended audience with that catchy hook with immediate effect, leaving almost nothing to chance.
