From the opening moment where a hard edged, stop start rhythm teases the audience, Hamulec’s ‘Stos’ promises something absolutely devastating. Then, with the introduction of a heavy bass grind and a riff worthy of Sick of It All, the track really finds its feet, delivering on that immediate promise.
This isn’t just a straight ahead hardcore romp, however. The full on hardcore punk elements are intensified even further with the assistance of a few classic thrash metal riffs, and the presence of an unrelenting roar of a voice that pulls the best from hardcore and metalcore to create something truly intense.
Instrumental passages where harsher guitar tones and pneumatic drums hint at more of a black metal tone steer the track further away from its hardcore origins to add even further to a brilliant and brutalist melting pot of noise, but with everything centring around a speed driven riff and hefty drum sound, there’s always a coherent feel to the arrangement, no matter where the band chooses to go.
Despite a Polish lyric, the number is certainly intense enough for the track to appeal to non-Polish speakers. It really shows how great music is universal, and how strong sounding metal knows no boundaries. ‘Stos’ is tight as hell, and truly immense – very much the kind of recording that deserves to give Hamulec a breakthrough in the UK and beyond.
