If you’ve been paying attention over the past six months or so, you might have spotted a new Scottish band on the rise. Silver Dollar Room play classic rock riffs but temper tham with an influence that’s best described as melodic grunge. Their early singles shared strong influences from both Stone Temple Pilots and Bush, and at their best, Silver Dollar toom sound like a slightly heavier take on some of those post grunge acts from the late 90s.
‘Manrle’ – another taste of an album due for release at the end of August 2024 – is the perfect choice for a stand alone listen. It comes with a Pearl Jam influence when a muted drum sound and ringing guitar provide the bed for a very emotive vocal, but there’s a little more melody injected when a jangling tone fleshes out louder moments in the manner of a couple of old Collective Soul tunes. The presence of bassist Lisa Aird on counter vocal lends a everything greater melodic touch, and even when working at a slower tempo, there’s a great power in the SDR sound. The arrangement gradually swells from imoody beginnings, and by the time everything reaches a climax, the whole band can be heard pulling together to create something almost timeless. It’s big without being bombastic; retro without sounding tired – a few plays actually allows this slow burner to sound like one of the finest Silver Dollar Room tunes to date.
