In a shift from the semi-gothic sounds on their debut EP, Pollyanna Blue opt for a bigger, rockier sound on their current single ‘Vultures’.
From the outset, the guitars adopt a much bigger sound, and the choppy rhythm used to open the number sets up a superbly crashy sound that allows the rhythm section to add an extra punch. There are fleeting moments where the crunch and tone calls back to a couple of old Foo Fighters hits, but as always, Pollyanna Blue are able to add their own twist to a familiar sound. In this case, the way Zoe Collins applies a really huge and flowing vocal contrasts the heavier edge with a timeless alternative melody, and the smoother sound results in her greatest performance to date,
There’s always a keen ear for melody here, but the musical toughness continues throughout; the choppy rhythm eventually underscores a huge chorus where a few classic hard rock tones owe a little more to the likes of Halestorm, and eventually when slowing down, the semi-grungy groove shows off an unshakable heaviness that brings back a little more of a familiar Pollyanna Blue darkness. In short, despite showing off a few different moods, these three minutes bring fans everything they could wish for and showcase a great band very much on the rise.
